Finchampstead Extension

Sustainable side extension to rural family home

The existing property is a detached dwelling built in the late Edwardian era, set within a one acre plot of land in the Berkshire countryside.

In the design of the extension, the natural slope of the site is utilised by setting the ground level over a metre lower than the host structure and the first floor accommodation within the roof void. This almost doubles the amount of internal area of the property with minimal impact on its sensitive surroundings.

The new extension will be well insulated and the existing house will be sheathed with high performance external insulation. In addition, a heat recovery mechanical ventilation system will be installed throughout the house. Combined, these measures will greatly improve the environmental performance of the property and extend its habitable lifespan.
